My name is Michael and I'm a Head of Digital sharing a bit of marketing magic, plenty of knowledge and a lot of dedication.
One of my first cars was a '91 Honda Accord. It was bloody old and literally immortal.
Back then, Honda was a legend, and no one could have imagined that in 2025 the brand would be facing years of declining car sales, with its market share shrinking more than five times since 2007.
These 10 tips can help Honda Australia flip the UX game and win in the online shopper journey.
10 Mistakes Honda Makes Online - and What It Takes to Create a Great Customer Experience
I walked their car purchase process end-to-end and mapped the wins that cures CX, increase convertions, and increase Honda online accessibility.

Final Takeaways: What Honda Can Learn from Digital Leaders
Customer journey often starts with Google Shopping
BlockerSearching on Google with the keyword "hybrid car" - Honda is nowhere to be found in the shopping section. Instead, the PMax results are dominated by other manufacturers, primarily Chinese brands like GWM and BYD, as well as Suzuki and Peugeot.
This is a red flag. For a brand of Honda's scale, missing from the first page of organic and paid results means a massive loss of visibility at the most critical stage of the customer journey. Organic search and Performance Max (PMax) campaigns are some of the most important traffic drivers in automotive digital marketing.
UnlockEnsure connecting to Merchant Center and placing your products there. Create PMax campaigns promoting these products. Optimise product pages and descriptions for the better fit to Google Merchant Center recomendations.
BlockerDespite Honda's evident efforts in SEO optimization, the brand fails to appear on the first page of Google for key high-intent searches such as "hybrid car". Neither paid ads nor organic listings feature Honda, while competitors like Lexus, MG, Mazda, Suzuki, and Kia dominate visibility. Being absent from page one is critical - as the saying goes, "the best place to hide a dead body is page two of Google." Customers won't scroll that far.
UnlockHonda must build stronger visibility through a dual strategy of SEO and paid search integration. By aligning organic optimization with Search and Brand campaigns, so the brand assured it shows up consistently at the start of the customer journey.
Overloaded Landing Pages Don't Sell
BlockerHonda clearly invested SEO effort into its hybrid landing page - the very first screen contains four separate headlines featuring the phrase Honda Hybrid. However, this keyword stuffing approach doesn't translate into effective customer engagement. Instead of pulling users in, the page overwhelms them with dense text blocks that few visitors will actually read.
UnlockA landing page should serve as a conversion accelerator, not a keyword warehouse. To capture attention and drive action, Honda must shift from text-heavy pages to visual storytelling: clear value propositions, compelling visuals, interactive elements, and customer-centric proof points (like fuel savings calculators, testimonials, or real driving scenarios).
Core Web Vitals Failure Blocks Growth
BlockerContrary to the initial impression, it's clear that Honda's SEO team has done little more than sprinkle a few headlines with the phrase Honda Hybrid. A PageSpeed Insights report shows fundamental errors, both from a front-end perspective and in terms of SEO optimization. The page fails the Core Web Vitals Assessment, which means it doesn't meet Google's essential user experience metrics.
Such results dramatically limit Honda's ability to attract organic traffic. And there's an even bigger issue: Google penalizes websites where users cannot complete their journey - in this case, the inability to finalize a purchase or meaningful conversion directly online.
UnlockFor Honda to compete digitally, it must fix the technical foundation first: optimize speed, responsiveness, and interactivity to pass Core Web Vitals, while also building clear user flows toward conversion. Without this, even the best campaigns will waste money driving traffic to a broken experience.
Lost in the Models
BlockerExploring Honda's website quickly becomes confusing. As a customer, I know I want a crossover, yet the product cards don't clearly state which class each model belongs to. While it's possible to guess intuitively that H means compact crossover (HR-V → ZR-V → CR-V), car buying is not a game of guessing. Class and size category are critical parameters for decision-making, and their absence makes the selection process unnecessarily complicated.
UnlockThe choice should be simple and transparent. By clearly labeling each model with its class (e.g., Compact SUV, Mid-size SUV, Family SUV), Honda can guide users to the right product faster and reduce friction in the decision journey. Competitors already highlight this upfront, making their CX feel smoother and more intuitive.
Forced Postcode Pop-Up Creates Friction
BlockerAfter selecting a car and clicking for more details, the entire screen is blocked by a mandatory postcode pop-up. The problem? It cannot be skipped. For a user who is still in the exploration stage, this feels intrusive and unnecessary. Customers don't like to share personal information without a clear reason, and at this point in the journey, there is none. The result is frustration and likely a high number of abandoned sessions.
UnlockInstead of forcing data collection upfront, Honda should adopt a progressive disclosure approach. Allow users to browse freely first, then ask for location details at a natural point in the journey - for example, when checking inventory, calculating drive-away pricing, or booking a test drive. This way, sharing information feels logical and valuable, not forced. It is crucial to clearly explain why location data is needed (e.g., "to show stock availability and accurate pricing in your area").
Discounts Without Context Don't Convert
BlockerRight from the start, Honda tells me that the 2024 CR-V build comes with a $3,000 discount. The problem? I have no reference point. Since I'm not yet familiar with the baseline price, this "discount" doesn't register as a benefit - it simply becomes the new normal. At the same time, long text sections like the "Efficiency Evolved" paragraph are unlikely to be read. Most users will scroll past without engaging.
UnlockFor a discount to work as a purchase trigger, it needs context and framing. The clearest way is to show was / now pricing (e.g., $49,900 → $46,900). Even better, instead of cutting price, turn the benefit into added value: cashback, accessories, free service, upgrades, or complimentary insurance. This approach makes the customer feel rewarded, not just informed.
Accessory Selection That Confuses Instead of Inspires
BlockerThe accessory selection process on Honda's site is overly complex and lacks transparency. It's impossible to select multiple packs at once, and many individual accessories don't come with enough detail for customers to understand what exactly they are buying. The experience feels frustrating instead of engaging - instead of enhancing the purchase journey, it creates uncertainty.
UnlockAccessory selection should be a moment of inspiration, not confusion. By simplifying the mechanics and making the process more visual, Honda can turn this step into an upsell opportunity. Showing customers what changes on or inside the car when an accessory is added, or letting them compare packs side by side, would help them feel in control and excited about customizing their vehicle.
Broken Handoff Between Online and Dealership
BlockerHonda allows users to configure their own build online, saving it as a "unique ID" that should, in theory, be passed to dealerships when a customer applies for finance or books a test drive. In reality, dealers don't receive this information. When the customer arrives, the salesperson has no idea what configuration was chosen. This disconnect breaks the journey at one of the most critical points — the transition from digital to physical.
UnlockA seamless digital-to-dealership handoff is essential. If Honda integrates build data directly into the dealer CRM, the experience becomes smooth: the customer doesn't need to repeat themselves, and the salesperson can focus on reinforcing the decision instead of starting from scratch. This small fix would transform frustration into confidence and save Honda from losing warm leads.
Final Takeaways: What Honda Can Learn from Digital Leaders
Honda's current online journey highlights missed opportunities at almost every stage — from search visibility to landing page clarity, from accessory selection to dealership handoff. To regain competitive ground, the brand must reimagine its digital ecosystem not as a brochure, but as a seamless purchase and ownership platform.
Here are the actionable insights:
Transparent Price Calculators
Customers want clarity. Offering clear side-by-side comparisons of trims, specs, and total cost of ownership builds trust and reduces hesitation.
Click-to-Buy Capability
Kia and Tesla already enable customers to complete their purchase fully online. Honda needs to catch up, integrating financing, insurance, and delivery into a frictionless checkout flow.
Trade-In With Online Valuation
Tools like Hyundai's and CarMax's online appraisal reduce showroom uncertainty. Giving customers instant trade-in value makes the purchase decision faster and smoother.
Accessories Shop in eCommerce Format
Instead of confusing bundles, accessories should follow the familiar structure of an online store: product cards, reviews, images, and an "add to cart" experience.
